Downsview, ON: The team of Richard Jung of North York and Albin Choi of Toronto captured the 2008 Beck’s Non-Alcoholic Beer Men’s Better Ball Championship in a thrilling two-hole playoff victory today at Oakdale Golf and Country Club.
Jung and Choi finished at the top of the leaderboard alongside Dan Partland of Bolton and Bill Swartz of Georgetown. Both teams ended the round with a three under par 68, forcing a playoff. After two extra holes, it was Jung 15, and Choi, 16, that secured the title, topping a highly competitive field with their first Championship victory. The duo, both members of Caledon Woods Golf Club, are the first junior pair to win the trophy since the 2005 victory of Brady Ewart and David Stuart of Barrie.
“We started out strong, struggled through the middle and recovered near the end,” says Choi. “Finishing with 68, we definitely didn’t expect a playoff.”
Teammates Lee French and Darren Vandeloo shared third place alongside Luke Ovendon and Ryan Thomson one stroke off the pace at 69. Three time defending Champions (2002, 2006, 2007) Andrew Ross and Matthew Ian Young finished two strokes off the lead after shooting a 70.
The Ontario Men’s Better-Ball Championship was founded in 1959 by Oakdale G&CC members Marvin (Bud) Rothschild and Eddie Creed. Past winners include 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir with current caddy Brennan Little in 1988 and David Morland IV and his father one year earlier.
The GAO would like to thank Beck’s Non-Alcoholic Beer for its continuing support of this tournament. -30-
