Lockey Leads Play Suspended First Round at Ontario Amateur
Toronto, ON: Brantford native Nathan Lockey fired an opening 67, including a hole-in-one on the 10th hole, to grab the lead at the 2008 Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur at Islington Golf Club.
Inclement weather caused a suspension of play after the majority of the field finished up their first rounds. The 42 players who did not finish their opening round will return Wednesday morning and complete their rounds before they head out for their second round.
After finishing the front nine one over par Lockey aced the 212 yard par three 10th hole to spark a remarkable back nine. Following with his eagle at 10 Lockey birdied the 12th, 16th, 17th and 18th to finish the back nine with a five under par. Paired with his front nine Lockey ended up with a first round 4 under par giving him a one stroke lead heading into the second round.
Defending champion Christopher Ross of Dundas sits in right behind Lockey in second place after an opening round 68. After a bogey at the first Ross was able to regroup and put together a solid round which featured five birdies and only one additional bogey. Not far behind in third place at 2 under par are a group of four golfers including 2005 Champion Graham Hill of Bright’s Grove, Kyler Murphy of Toronto, Shaun LaFontaine of Cobourg and Cam Burke of Baden.
The 42 players along with the remainder of the field will tee off for round two tomorrow morning at 7:30 am, with the top sixty and ties advancing after a 36-hole cut after Wednesday’s round. | |
