Byrne looks to defend Ontario Match Play titlePort Carling, ON: Defending champion David Bryne of Essex, Ontario scored an easy 3 & 2 victory in the first-round of the Ontario Men's Match Play Championship being played at The Lake Joseph Club in Port Carling, Ontario. Byrne topped Mark Hicks of Niagara-on-the-Lake to start his quest for a second straight title in the Golf Association of Ontario championship. Last year, Byrne bested Chris Ross, the Ontario Amateur champion, in the 36-hole final. Byrne will face Daley Byles of Barrie in his second round match on Tuesday. Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ontario, who finished third in last week's Ontario Mid-Amateur Championship, captured his first round match 6 &5 over Derek Dalziel of Oakville. In a re-match of the 2006 final, Jimmy Latta of St. Clement's, Ontario faced Cam Burke of Baden, Ontario, but this time Burke was victorious. He scored a 3 & 2 win over Latta. Play continues until Thursday at the Muskoka area course. -30- | |
