Port Carling, ON – David Byrne of Essex, Ontario left 63 other golfers in his wake en route to capturing his second consecutive Men’s Match Play Championship title today at the Lake Joseph Club in Port Carling, Ontario.

The 20 year old University of Detroit Mercy sophomore defeated Cambridge’s Brad Larente 3&2 with an 18-foot putt for par on the sixteenth hole during final round action. Byrne and Larente were the final two players after the previous three days and five rounds of play at the Muskoka area course.

Larente, a University of Eastern Michigan student, is a familiar opponent to Byrne.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy going into the match,” says Byrne. “I’ve played against Brad at a number of events before and he makes some quality shots when his back is against the wall.”

Byrne considers his experience at the Lake Joseph Club the determining factor in his win, having captured the Match Play at the same course in 2007.

“It feels great to have won here twice – the practice has definitely paid off.”

Byrne was ranked as the top men’s amateur player in Ontario for 2007. He is looking to best his 2007 runner-up finish at the upcoming Investors Group Men’s Amateur Championship at Islington Golf Club July 8th – 11th

Larente, who represents Whistle Bear Golf Club, can also be seen at the same event, but not before he competes in the British Amateur Championship at Turnberry, Scotland next week.

The Golf Association of Ontario would like to thank the staff and members of The Lake Joseph Club as well as ClubLink for their continuing support of amateur golf in Ontario.
