LaFontaine Takes Lead at Ontario Mid-Amateur Championship, McCarthy Three Back

Thornhill, ON: Cobourg native Shawn LaFontaine was the lone player to break par and take the lead today during second round action at the Investors Group Ontario Men's Mid-Amateur Championship.

 

 

25 year old Lafontaine, who started the day at two-over and one stroke off the pace, carded three birdies and two bogies for a one-under score of  70 under overcast conditions at the Thornhill Golf and Country Club. Round one co-leader and 2006 champion Peter McCarthy finished with a 74, trailing LaFontaine by 3 strokes overall after 36 holes. Colin Grieve of Stoney Creek is four shots off the pace, followed by Matthew Ion Young of Burlington in fourth position heading into the final round.

 

Grieve, who represents Glendale Golf and Country Club, leads the Ontario Mid-Master Championship (40 and over) by one stroke, followed by Waterloo's Rob Cowan and Pickering native Mark Brewer, with two-day total scores of 149.

 

The top two 2008 Ontario Men’s Mid-Master Championship finishers (age 40 and over) and the top two  2008 Ontario Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship finishers (age 25 and over) will comprise the Ontario Mid-Amateur Team.  The team will represent Ontario at the Candian Men's Mid-Amateur Championshop in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia.

 
In total, sixty-two players made the cut which fell at 159. Tomorrow’s final round action begins at 7:30 am with the leaders teeing off 10:50 am.
