Close Field at Ontario Men's Mid Amateur Championship Thornhill, ON: First round action at the Investors Group Men's Mid-Amateur Championship wrapped up Tuesday evening at Thornhill Golf and Country Club with three golfers sharing the top of the leaderboard. 2006 Champion Peter McCarthy of Toronto, Colin Grieve of Stoney Creek and Blaine Fredrickson of Etobicoke each carded a one-over 72 in challenging and frequently wet conditions. McCarthy looks hold onto his lead to join former champion Stu Hamilton (1993, 1998) as the only player to win two titles, although two former winners are close at his heels. Mark Mealia (1996) of Richmond Hill is one stroke back at 73 along with Jay Campbell of London and Shawn LaFontaine of Cobourg. Defending champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge is two strokes off the pace along with Scott Hickerson of Mississauga, Mark Brewer of Pickering, Christian Komsa of Lasalle, Mathew Ion Young of Burlington, and Ron Pearson and Rick Valin, both of Kitchener. The Investors Group Men’s Mid-Amateur is limited to players 25 years of age and older with a handicap factor of 8.4 or less. The field will tee of for round two tomorrow morning at 7:00 am, with the top sixty and ties advancing after a 36-hole cut on Wednesday evening. The GAO would like to thank Investors Group for their continuing support of amateur golf in Ontario as well as Thornhill Golf and Country Club for hosting this year’s event.
