Golf Canada allots each Provincial Golf Association a number of quota spots for the Canadian Junior Championship. The quota number is based on a Golf Canada formula and is available through the GAO.  The GAO fulfils its respective quota through the Ontario Junior and then forwards the names of the eligible golfers to Golf Canada. The number of quota spots for the Ontario Junior will be made available on site.

If there is a tie for the final Quota spot, a hole-by-hole playoff will be held immediately following play.  A player not immediately available for the playoff shall forfeit his spot.  Multiple no-shows shall be decided by using the GAO Tie-Breaking policy.

In an effort to continue the development of golf coaches in Ontario and to enhance the athlete experience at GAO Provincial Junior Championships, the GAO has implemented a few new initiatives.

Coaches

It is expected, that many players will have their personal coaches on site at some point during the competition and it is at the GAO’s discretion as to who can provide coaching services during the event. Generally, all Coaches (see appendix B for definition) are welcome but must sign in, display a generic coaching badge and must follow certain guidelines:

Coaches can:

  1. Work with athletes on course during the practice as long as the group maintains a reasonable pace of play.
  2. Work with athletes before and after competitive rounds
  3. Watch during competitive rounds but must remain on the cart part and a minimum of 50 yards from his or her athlete.
  4. Access practice facilities (see appendix A)

  Coaches cannot:

  1. Offer advice during a competitive round
  2. Solicit business during the championship
  3. Access the practice facilities without a badge (see appendix A)
  4. Offer rulings during the competition to any participating athletes

Appendix ‘A’ - Practice Facilities

The GAO will rope all practice facilities during the week of the championship whenever possible. Only players and coaches may access these areas, No parents. Signs will also be posted communicating this message.   Coaches must sign in with the GAO at the tournament office and obtain a badge in order to access the practice facilities.   Parents are not permitted inside the ropes at anytime during the championship.

Appendix ‘B’ – Definition of a Coach

For the purpose of Provincial Championships, the GAO defines a Coach as a PGA of Canada member who has been identified by an athlete competing in the competition as their Coach of Record.

All inquiries about these coaching policies and procedures should be directed to the GAO.

Juniors must be members of the Golf Association of Ontario to participate in any GAO tournaments (including GAO Junior tournaments).
